Early detection of breast cancer for health professionals
Course overview
Open access e-learning modules using the interprofessional education approach, and the articles demonstrating the results of the mix-method study and literature reviews conducted within the project are aimed to improve cooperation between different professional groups in the diagnostic process for breast cancer patients, and consequently result in better services for women entering the breast cancer diagnostic process not only in the countries participating in the project but also across whole Europe.
In the first learning module the diagnostic breast cancer process is dealt with from global, national and international viewpoints and breast cancer epidemiological issues are considered. The roles and tasks of different health professionals are described and the importance of interprofessional cooperation in the care and service chain is covered. The issues related to communication and psychosocial issues related to breast cancer are highlighted.
The second learning module for radiographers consists of the physics and function of equipment used in breast screening imaging (mammography), including quality assurance, patient care and positioning with breast anatomy, criteria for image quality and artefacts
The third learning module is about further laboratory and imaging examinations related to breast cancer diagnostics. The physics and function of equipment, technological principles, patient awareness and safety, contrast media aspects, biopsies, pre-analytical factors in sample collection, immunohistochemical markers and blood tests are presented. Competences expected involve activities that are complex both technically and professionally.
